DD9 disassembly instructions

docp - 2012-11-18 05:20

One of the top notch collectibles is no doubt the DD9 ....but as against the other players this doesn't become a paperweight on account of a cracked gear wheel .....unknown to many there are two belts one for each motor which turn to a tarry black glue if you don't use your unit regularly...

If it is just to replace belts go in this order:
1: Don't unscrew the 2 hinge screws
2: Unscrew the 3 body screws
3. The 2 pcb screws
4. The two headphone ornament screws

This allows you to have a cassette in place because the cassette door hasn't been removed in case you want to test how the unit plays before closing up ALTHOUGH the manual tries to show us how to get the shell and cassette door off as shown below

What follows is the standard reference from the service manual (to confuse you like hell )

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

docp - 2012-11-18 05:28

Pry the shell off`from the bottom edge that had two screws slipping it off the headphone jack last.

You'll now have the main circuitboard exposed with the two screws highlighted by the typical 'arrows' pointing to them. You'll have to a)remove the felt pads securing flex pcbs and b) unscrew the headphone socket decorative trim and c)desolder a wire next

While you are caught up in wanting to remove this circuit board YOU WILL FAIL to notice a tiny window exposing a tiny latch mechanism that holds a tiny switch of this PCB between its two prongs. These prongs move to the left/right depending on direction of play and slide that switch....forget about realigning this and you'll have a cocky DD9 with an 'illogical' temperament

You now are ready to do the dirty work of removing the nasty gooey belt glue yuck!!

Scraping along the centre of the pulley with a tiny screwdriver helps remove the major portion of the gunk....the rest has always been misery for me...till I thought 'professionally' ....not like you tech folks ...like a dentist ....now what do we advise for those hard to reach areas?? .... ....flossing .....solvent soaked twine works wonders!!

DocP this is dentist-propaganda... Using your methods you are merely enforcing on the whole of S2G just how beneficial "flossing" is!

Ingenius though... Did you need to do any lubrication since this hasn't been used since a long time? Any wow/flutter after the belt change?

minty - 2012-11-18 06:11

The best way to remove the goo from the pulleys is to use Sticky Stuff Remover. This is available from eBay and is inexpensive. This stuff is amazing. It's also great for removing unwanted labels from boxes.

docp - 2012-11-18 06:30

I go with my dental hand sanitizer that's almost 90% isopropyl alcohol

minty - 2012-11-18 06:46

Trust me, Sticky Stuff Remover removes the goo in seconds. I've tried everything under the sun, but nothing works as well as this stuff.

Are you referring to something like googone? (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GooGon...;hash=item5aea429fd6)

cooper - 2012-11-18 06:53

I found the best method is to use set of tools that look like dentist tools from (HARBOR FREIGHT) about $3.00 and use rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs (you know the kind that you clean your ears with) you can cut the cotton swabs in half  and use both ends without getting tar all over you. I can change the belts on the(AIWA HS-JO2 AND THE HS-J300 ) in less than a hour with this method.I am not a cassette repairman. hope this helps. COOPER.

minty - 2012-11-18 07:03

150668623471. This is the item number on eBay UK. Check it out guys. You won't be disappointed.

docp - 2012-11-18 07:16

Yes, cotton swabs/earbuds and tissues mositened with alcohol is pretty much standard protocol...getting into the deeper grooves can get a bit frustrating ....that's when the flossing helps

nak.d - 2012-11-18 08:12

Doc, are these small belts available separately or only via a multi pack? Regards other sizes I'm good for years

cooper - 2012-11-18 08:32

Mabe (turntableneedels.com) can help with almost all belts that were ever made. hope this helps. COOPER.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS : When re assembling:

1. The main circuit board has a bend plate contact that has quite a bit of tension ...I think it helps pop open the battery compartment ...so the battery compartment must be open to allow proper seating of the pcb WITHOUT the need of applying force

2. There are two P levers ...the white prongs in the photo...to the right of the black/silver/black reflector pulley (N & R ...normal/reverse I would assume) (Playback levers?) that have to engage leaf switches S702(fwd head switch) & S703(rev head switch)

and

there is another switch S701(photo interrupter) that engages a switch lever (black...to the left of the reflector wheel/pulley) that switches between forward and reverse by moving the switch to the left or the right

WOW your DD9 makes my heart FLUTTER !! I thought so too...thinking it was an indestructible masterpiece of technology with no faults...only high specs

But Man has always been the victim of rubber failures ...an the DD9 has more than its fair share the 9 lives prefixed with 2 built in Deaths Death by belt & Death by Idler tyre !!

YES! There is a servo circuit /quartz locked yabba dabba doo ...that tries to constant make sure your tape sounds okay inspite of a failing belt or an idler with a notch caused by you keeping aside your DD9 for too long without using it...so the head atop the motor spindle which is supposed to make the idler tyre revolve creates a dimple just because it has sat there for too long...and this creates a playback that can sound like the walkman is on horseback ...

The music may sound moderately perfect as the circuits kick in...but the wobble can be felt as a mild vibration or a knock knock knock or heard through the body....better not ignore this... ADJUST THE WOW & FLUTTER

Adjusting the Motor : Wow & Flutter aspects

1. You've got half a dozen belts ...tried the correct size, a little smaller, tried a little thin, a little thick and you finally are convinced that the first choice was the best...

2. You forget to align the P levers and the three switches ...and witness non stop auto diagnostics...logic gone wild ... you realize this and correct it

3. Your unit plays...but has a crazy thud thud because of the lousy dimple in the idler tyre...but you don't have an immediate replacement ...the electronics is taking over...sounds quite good...you close it...

You can sleep ...you feel guilty and all you can picture is a motor going wobble wobble because of an idler tyre...how you wish there was some way of adjusting the way the motor aligns itslef with that darn tyre....

THE WAY

1. Make sure the motor attachment screw seems tight enough ...'A'

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

2. Loosen the thrust adjustment screws and adjust/tighten while holding the motor down gently 'B' ... There should be almost no wobble/play ...check by pressing and releasing the bottom end of the motor 'C'

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

3. Fine tune wow & flutter using the adjustment screw

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Now onto a small nag nag issue....you have the circuit board off and that disengages the 3 switches rendering the unit inoperable for testing while open.... so steps 1 & 2 are quite okay ...checking whether the wow & flutter adjustment has been done properly then & there requires a bit more dedication ....ouch! (Not for me)

Small Side Note : As you can guess ...this is me after fooling around with my own DD9

I now need to replace atleast one idler tyre to make myself happy and am looking at duplicating the idler tyre with medical grade addition silicone hoping for extra durability/almost no deterioration. Will keep you folks updated on that.

Wonder if it will work to specs, using the silicone? Have to wait and see. Do have spare tires. You can also resurface the tire if it has a bump in it, so long it not to hard, or soft. Strong rubber rejuvenator, roller cleaner for printers works best, rub on microfiber cloth on hard smooth surface a few times. If to thin, then have no choice but to replace.

Thanks for the added input on surface modifiers....especially the roller cleaners..nice!

The hardest Silicone we use is called Putty Consistency (Shore Hardness 60) and it looks like it just might work. I am a bit worried about prying off the existing tyre for fine smoothing down without a replacement in hand, but am very eager to try making one ...shall keep you informed.

Can the Belts be replaced in the Sony WM-DD9 - Without 'desoldering any wire's?

Do you,  Have the belts for sale?

Thanks!, your too nice!

With all this info, I almost wish I'd hung on to the one I had now.

It had auto-reverse &/or logic issues, but if I got it to play it was rock solid...

Looks rather complicated!

I rather do open heart surgery, is more simple!!

Extremely usefull thread! One of my DD's was sudenly playing music backwards when in reverse mode. I didn't hear the devil, but it sounded bad lol  Reading this thread I suspected one of the mentioned S701,S702 or S703 switches wasn't functioning correctly. After opening it up and cleaning the switches the problem was solved! Thanks a lot Doc!

Moved to best threads.

DOCP, could you re-post it in the new forum? (you can upload the photos directly without using imageshack)
