Sanyo MX-920 in for surgery

So, finally a dream is realised. I recently took delivery of a Sanyo MX-920. In rough shape but still beautiful, i do love a challenge so this was right up my alley.

Here she is as she arrived at her former keepers:

And here she is after a teardown:

I have made quite a bit of progress on her since these were taken so i'll update the thread soon.

When she arrived there was power, radio played and line in played, when i next turned her on there was radio very feintly in the background even with volume at full, next time i turned her on there was nothing for about 15 minutes then gradually the radio came back. Now there is nothing at all. I'm thinking there must be a bad solder joint somewhere so thats next to tackle.

Rebelted the deck but no buttons produce anything, however, if i manually lift the heads the motor starts spinning and the tape spindle turns so the rebelting looks good just no life from any buttons. More investigation needed. Any thoughts if you have experience of this box please feel free to chime in.

Worse case scenario i can look at it, it's bloody beautiful! Big thanks to Rudey also, a proper gent to deal with as always, he ensured i went into this eyes wide open with no surprises, a stand up guy.

Super congrats tstar, id go streight to the top and ask superduper or stormin norman, same guy, as i don't think the decks are streight forward on these and i know how long you have wanted one, this thread will be great to follow and im sure northerner will bee interested to as he has issues with his 920, good luck dude

He-hey! What's cookin'? A Sanyo M-X920! You know, the kind with at least two shortwave bands and a fine-tuning knob. An' there's that robust flavour we call old-school heft! Sure to stew the tuner of a post-Seventies Aiwa or Sony -- them and their recipes that hardly ever come with fine-tuning.

Braise away, mates, braise away ...

So pleased you finally got one Tre! I still think this is one of the most beautiful boxes ever. Yours is well filthy!...but dirt comes off, that's what baths are for!!!

As Reno mentioned my deck was fully working and then one day it just stopped, and it's not belts. As everything else is perfect I've never got round to checking the deck out so will be interested to see what you work out Tre.

Looking forward to seeing it shining again!

Thanks Rah, yeah it's been a long time coming and I'm over the moon. I've had the deck out and lubed rebelled cleaned etc but I only got halfway done before duty called so there are a few more hrs to go into it yet.

Hat off to your daring project. Whoever resurrect a Sanyo is my personal hero; but whoever resurrect a 920 is everybody's hero. Go ahead Mr. T-S!

Thanks Sanyovar! This is my all time grail so lots of care will be taken on rebuild and no expense spared.

I already have this box albeit an 'F' version and already restored. I found this one on eBay Italy and of course it was a wreck but cheapish! Tre called dibs on it some time ago and I figured he was the best one to pass the project onto. I've got a Big Ben with issues and lots of other projects that need attending to.   There is some potential with this 920 as this video shows a few days before I shipped it to Tre. Looking forward to the final result of this one its in good hands now.

Lovely looking thing like all the big Sanyo's, I am not envious of you tackling the deck though - they are so complex but remember very often there is little wrong with a Sanyo that can't be easily fixed, you just have to find it

Would love that in my daily view lineup
