Hi all. I think I know the answer to this but I have a DD3 that turns off after a second or two of pressing play. Was working fine recently but it did have issues when raising volume level past 5. It would start making a crackling sound. I suspect the capacitors need replacing. Have some coming in from Fix Your Audio. Do you people agree that changing capacitors if the best place to start?

The best place to start is to actually start is to open open the walkman, unsolder the head connectors and move the PCB on the side. You will be able to see the central gear (which is probably broken) and see the most probable reason why your walkman behaves like that.
As for the volume, try to clean the potentiometer with the contact spray.
Also, there is a full maintenance tutorial here + on fixyouraduio for every single step you may need to do on your unit.

and probably millions of videos on yt but I would rather stick to those 2 tutorials for any WM-DD series walkman.

I replaced the central gear and did clean the volume pot too. Seems intermittent at the moment. I have a set of capacitors coming. Will then do a full tear down for a proper inspection and repair.

Great, if you already replaced the central gear, maybe you touched something regarding the power supply (battery contacts or wires from terminals to the PCB, motor power wires etc), so it would be perfect if you could check all of that since you are already keen to replace caps (which is a fair call).
