Hello Everyone. Another Walkman on the bench currently, this time it's a WM-5. Opened it up carefully and found one wire detached already. There are two violet wires coming from the motor. One was attached, the other detached. I'm looking for a service manual for the WM-5. I thought it was close enough to a WM-2, but it's not quite. If anyone has one that they can share, I'd be grateful. Cheers. Norm
Looks like the violet wires are for the servo function based on info from the WM-2 SM. In that case, perhaps, this is where it's supposed to go? Cheers.
I just bought the manual. As luck would have it, the board layout on my WM-5 is not what is printed in the manual. Ugh.
Violet wires go to the FG points maked on the PCB silkscreen. Polarity doesn't matter. Unfortunately WM-5 has 2 versions and only one is depicted in the manual (likely the early one).
Hi Valentin, thank you for the info. I really should have known better when I bought this unit, it had some moderate corrosion in the battery box, though it look fairly contained and isolated in the eBay pictures. When I received it and opened it up, I realized that it spread to other parts. There was this crystalized battery acid 'powder' on almost everything. I wanted to save the thing, so I thoroghly cleaned and lubricated it, recapped it, put on a new belt and tried to figure out where the detached wire goes, which I eventually did, yes you are right of course it did go to the FG servo. Then in the process, I detached another wire myself which I can't figure out. It is a black wire running from the Play switch. For the SM that I have, the trace on the PCB does not match, so I don't know. I may try to study the schematic diagram further to try and figure it out. The frustration on this one was pretty high and I've just labelled it as a parts unit for now. I was a little more selective and won an eBay bid on a second WM-5, which appears to be cleaner and at least will power on. I've learn a few lessons the hard way from this project and will be changing my protocol for working on these Walkman's going forward and that is to take pictures of all the wires right after opening up the case. I recklessly was of the mindset that I could just refer to the service manual if anything went wrong. I've since readjust my thinking. Cheers! Norm
Okay, I have to thank Valentin for encouraging me to continue. I did find where the disconnected wire goes. I was able to trace out on the schematic diagram other components that come in contact with that switch wire and hunt down that particular component on the PCB. After soldering the wire to its respective pad, I test played the Walkman and it sounded quite good even w/o any adjustments to speed and azimuth yet. But - isn't there always a 'but, ...'? It will play for a random amount of time before shutting off. I observed the shutoff lever going past the range of the detection lever as if there was something preventing the former to stay in contact with the latter. Looks like another mandatory PCB removal to see what is causing this anomaly. This thing is determined not to live, lol. Cheers!
