My picture view program is Irfan View - that has an easy batch convert function, converting all files, stored in one location from one format to another, and you can adjust different format settings. But would the links then still work, when you have changed the file extensions ?

In theory it should do. If you edit any post with pictures attached you will notice that it refers to an attachment number rather than the file name itself. If that doesn't change it should be good to go and, if that access is available, I am sure we could test it out with one post.

    Thanks Longman!
Ok, I think you're right. I'll ask the tech how can this be possible, if it is, and see if it's complicated to implement.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you guys. I've received several donations and I think with that we can upgrade to a bigger server.
These days I'm a bit too busy and also a bit lazy to do all these. I could free up a few dozens of MB so I have now probably a few weeks until the problems arise again, and so to do the upgrade.
    I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for all your hard work, Mr walkman archive!

I was just posting a comment and notices that multi-quote doesn't seem to be working. I can toggle quotes on, but as soon as I try to add them to my post I get this error.

    Screenshot 2026-10-07 104609.png

Just replying to a post adds the quote correctly, which with a bit of editing is how I got my post up.

I am pretty sure I was not posting anything that was "not acceptable"! ;)

Edit: Apologies for posting a PNG again! I did try after to convert to JPG, but in this case it only saved 7KB.

May be , you can say the machine to save all screenshots as jpg. By my meaning, screenshots only have the function to remind or to point, so quality doesn`t matter so much.

I compared .jpg screenshots with .png photos that come from google translate. It's the same photo, one is translated and .png. The .png is a smaller file than the original. Just a casual look through my files and .png seems to be the same or smaller files than my .jpg's, nothing is huge but even if it was I'd have to convert it into a smaller files otherwise the uploader would reject it.

There are two thing here. One is that JPG is designed for photography, so is better for pictures.

"The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format can produce a smaller file than PNG for photographic (and photo-like) images, since JPEG uses a lossy encoding method specifically designed for photographic image data, which is typically dominated by soft, low-contrast transitions, and an amount of noise or similar irregular structures. Using PNG instead of a high-quality JPEG for such images would result in a large increase in file size with negligible gain in quality. In comparison, when storing images that contain text, line art, or graphics – images with sharp transitions and large areas of solid color – the PNG format can compress image data more than JPEG can."

The second is that JPG images can use various levels of compression. So for example, I took (the original of) this picture:
    DSC_0001-2 (Large).jpg

...and opened and resaved it as another JPG file, which is considerably smaller even though both versions are 6000 x 4000 resolution.
    Screenshot 2026-10-11 105455.png

However, the above screenshot of these 2 files in PNG is smaller than the same image converted to JPG.

So horses for courses I guess. As most of the thing I am scanning are more image based, I have found JPG to be much better.

I now have made jpg photos from my new cassettes to add them to my "TDK-Cassettes" - Thread https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/my-tdk-cassettes-collection.8611/page-10#post-94814
The size of all 7 pictures together was about 22 Mb. After Batch-Convert to PNG with Irfan View ( There are compression-levels, i took level 8 ) size was 76 MB. Then i looked for "good compression of pictures without greater loss" in web, and found this https://www.iloveimg.com/de/bild-komprimieren . After compression i`ve got a size of about 5 MB for all 7 jpg together . Thats really a good result.

It should be noted that PNG is a lossless format, so different levels of compression should not change the quality of the image, but rather put more stress on whatever computer is trying to display it, although I assume that would be considerably less than with audio or video.

Alternatively, JPEG is a lossy format, so different compression levels degrade the picture quality. The pictures you posted look fine to my eyes though.

Donated 25EU. This a nice forum, even though I am seldom here nowadays, but I will support it for old times sake.

I was always careful to use small resized and compressed .jpg files.

I just noticed that the "Upload a File" option does not allow WebP format pictures. I tried changing the extension to see if it would display properly anyway, but the upload feature is obviously a bit more clever than that!

If we can add this and want to keep ahead of the curve, it might be worthwhile adding JPEG XL (.jxl) too, which has recently been added to the stable releases of most web browsers.
