    Hi everyone, possibly the least technical question I will ever ask in the forums…. Recently acquired this Sony Walkman D3 with packaging but it was not in the packaging when I picked it up. Where were all of the items in the blue box located when new and how oriented? Particularly the Walkman itself? It’s REALLY snug in there even when not in a bag. There are 2 bags, one larger, one smaller, and then a piece of thin foam. I’m almost certain that the cardboard insert didn’t straddle the styrofoam. It must have sat on the bottom of the styrofoam and with the flat area flat on the back side. The stack up of the styrofoam and cardboard equals the thickness of the box. The microphone and clip assembly are in the correct bag I think. Where was it in the styrofoam? Similar with the strap. Just floating around the pocket next to the Walkman? I figured for sure there would be a NOS unboxing somewhere on the web but can’t find it. I know silly questions but I’d like to store it in the original configuration. Thanks!

    Follow up question, did the D3 come with headphones? The seller had a slew of headphones and said I could pick one pair. All were cheap newer plastic Sony units except for the pair of MDR-W20s that were new unused so I picked those. No place for them in a D3 box so not original…

    Check the servicemanual of WM-D3, on the last page is the accessorry list. SM states that the headphone supplied for US was the MDR-W20.
    And do a search, on WML https://walkman.land/sony/wm-d3 also W20....and just google WM-D3 boxed and see what comes up, you could also ask 'boxedwalkman on instagram...he probably knows...maye the headphones go under the foam.....

    And do you also have the original mic with it? The model number ECX-264 (could be ECM) in the service manual doesn't show any Sony mic....can you post which model number yo've got?

    Thanks! Haven't ever see "boxedwalkman" great tip. I have the original mic and the little lapel clip it connects into. I don't think it was ever used. I bought from original buyer and have the whole history of the unit. He has a home recording studio and so has the full complement of pro microphones and headphones... super curious if the headphones somehow were in that box? Maybe they were in a bag and in the cardboard half of the packaging... Walkman came will full rebuild kit from Marian, all in the nice white padded envelope straight from Slovakia. should be a someone easy restoration. I'd really like to get it to spec from an audio response standpoint but don't have all of the nice analytical equipment that the pros on the forum here have. Will clean up and install new center gear, tires, etc. and see how it sounds.

    I'll post some pics of the microphone.

    I'd keep an eye on yahoo.jp and see if any NOS (opened) come up, there's a couple on there now. It might just be the camera angle but the bottom (German) box looks deeper, I'm looking at the side panel spacing of the Sony and WM-D3. Is there two boxes, one with headphones, one without? It wouldn't surprise me.

    I'd credit the photo taker but the link just goes to random auction listings. This looks like the deeper box, also a German Listing.

    I think the styrofoam fills up part of the box depth and then that cardboard part in my picture fills up the rest. I think I answered my own question for the most part. Now knowing the TURBO headphones are factory original, I think they were either loose or in a bag and in the cardboard half of packaging. Just not sure where the bigger bag goes. Again the Walkman in the case BARELY fits in the styrofoam. Not much room for a plastic bag covering the Walkman/case.
    I’ll try to estimate how it goes for now, and keep searching sights to find a new in box.
    Thx!

    I don't have many boxed models but the ones I do have all have a pocket for the headphones similar to this (from Pinterest, thanks poster!). I feel like I've seen photos of the nicer models with a separate box for the headphones. Kent or Boodakhan might have NOS to verify.

    @Dauner

    While doing some editing on walkman.land for the WM-509 came across this advert....looks like the D3 was also delivered with a folding headphone, probably a MDR-A20 or A10.
    Would make more sense considering there is no room for a normal headband headphone.

    Thx! Actually the headphones do fit in the box if they get their own space ponder the cardboard insert. I think I’m getting close. The bags are a wonder though…
