I have just been looking at the Smash Hits archive https://www.flickr.com/photos/51106326@N00/albums/with/72157660492471210 The prizes from Sony and Woolworth's in 1984 were much more impressive. Strange thing is, with the exception of records the WM25 and tapes are the only Sony things I can imagine Woolworths selling. I wonder who the lucky winners in 1985 were
So this wasn't in the usa and in the last part of the year 1985 I had finally gotten my First real job after serving in the military. Before staggering off to a posh LONDON hotel carrying literally Mounds of free Sony personal...
If you look in the small print the prizes were to be drawn on 20th January 1985. Having read the question I'm not too sure of the answers. Is the Metal tape for the WM6 or the Top of the Range Hi Fi ? Woolworths were big in the UK right until 2009 when they went bankrupt. An increasing part of their business was selling and distributing CDs and DVDs so they were badly hit by downloads, and banks refusing to lend to them. In contrast in the 1990s I personally must have spent about £1000 on CDs in the New Milton branch (a small town in Hampshire where Woolworths was about the only place with a decent range), Apparently the German version of Woolworths is still going having outlasted both the American and British ones.
What poor prizes, i wouldn't have entered even back then lol the sony hifi is ok for low end though I was looking at grado Rs1 headphones and things like that back then, even though i couldn't afford them
In the same magazine there were half page adverts for "Just Seventeen" and "Horse and Pony" which shows the target audience of Smash Hits. I'm sure they would have been pleased with any of the prizes - even a tape. Nowadays I would still be pleased with parts of that Compact 77 Hi Fi even now, having a thing for drawer loading turntables.
ahh i diddn't see the d6c....at that time i was 15 if it was 85, i just lusted over more than most lol, the d6c is indeed a great walkman
get a jvc dc33l it's draw loading my man, i had an el cheapo draw loader alba or something like that can't remember when but it was quite good for what it was, it may have been an amstrad
Filled out the form, I did the DJ bit from a present day perspective. I'll send it by the 7th May next year (probably won't):
