Some of the cool old Japanese Websites are starting to disappear, there's some great ads that might be lost forever.
Toshiba Walky, how much neater is this than the silver model? I have to find the little speakers and the more heavy-duty looking battery case.

Toshiba KT-S1 and KT-R2 from 1982. The KT-R2 is nearly identical in size with the Sony WM-D6!

Toshiba XR-P9 from 1986, Toshiba's Portable CD Player was so different than the others, they used the same flat-square buttons on the boomboxes and smaller CD decks.

Oh wow! Thank you for posting this. I have a couple of RP-S400's and finding information about them is next to impossible.

I knew they had been launched around 1979 or 1980. I opened up one of mine and has a 1980 date code on the main PLL synthesizer chip.

The RP-S400 is the very first pocket radio with full PLL synthesis and digital readout. Toshiba was one of the first to offer this technology in 1974 with their ground breaking ST-910 FM tuner. It's pretty amazing they were able to shrink the circuitry so much by the end of the decade. Sony tried hard, but their thin line pocket radios for 1980 had PLL synthesized tuning but no digital frequency readout. The Sony ICF-2001 world receiver, also launched in 1980, had PLL synthesized tuning, digital frequency readout and direct entry tuning, but it was the size of a book. It is now open to debate which one made it to the market first. I was always under the impression the ICF-2001 was the very first synthesized portable with digital display, but it could have well been the Toshiba RP-S400!

That ad was from March of 1980, it was published for retailers so they might not have been on the market yet. I have a few small radios now, they were so neat when they came out but silly money for a kid. The last cool one I bought was the Sanyo RPM 6950, I don't know how it compares but it does have a calculator built in!

That's great to know Mister X! March of 1980 is very early, considering most publications had a publishing deadline of 3 months before they were mailed out.
I need to find out exactly when the Sony ICF-2001 was released but I am pretty sure it was not so early in the year...

These thin portables were introduced by the major Japanese manufacturers and I don't think were huge sellers, specially with the advent of the Walkman and derivatives in 1979. The technology was extremely new and expensive. I'm guessing Toshiba lost money on each one of them. They had to, if you consider that synthesized tuning was not a regular feature on portables until the mid 1980's.

It is interesting to note these did not have the word digital or digital tuning anywhere on them. Just "Synthesizer".

Toshiba used their own LSI chip on it, as you can see below:
