haha, never knew i would have the walkman virus again. i always wanted the japan models. these days, there are alot websites which deal with yahoo japan etc. already paid 1000's of euro's to buy this stuff.. yes, i have f502, f501, f509, f404,f203,f202,f101. or the gx90,fx85, f707 f701c. and many more. bought far too many of them. time to cool down. it's enough. but still, one more.. oja, these are all junk. it's all about the looks.
The addiction is real, even when I'm not looking something always comes up on my radar. I started out years ago more into Walkmans and slowly began buying more boomboxes. I've got dozens that qualify as "junk" but they might still have a future life, someday. Some of the really old models have old-timer "hacks" with drilled holes and mystery switches added. I think they nailed marketing on these back in the 80's, why would so many people want to collect the 100's of different designs of equipment that basically does the same thing?
well, when we started here or earlier, 25 years ago. walkman was a new subject. it was like a treasure hunt. we found out dd9 dc2, some aiwa's where the best around. but i could only buy the models, you found here in europe. the exotic ones where unreachable. couldn't buy those in japan. the last 6 months i'm doing fitness again, they play alot of 80's tracks. got the virus back. and now, i always wanted those walkman you wouldn't find here in europe. the f404, f203, gx90 etc. so, after 25 years i'm completing my walkman collection. never paid so much for walkman. 60 euro's was my max amount for a perfect dd9 25 years ago. alot of money for a dd9, because bought 25 and 35 euro dd9, or 17 euro dc2, etc. in all, i'm getting nuts again, love those "new" walkman units. walkman to me: 80's are my childhood, it's memories.
Haha, I like this. Yes, this hobby comes in waves. A lot depends on the possibilities at the specific moment
I never intended to be a collector 3½ years ago when I decided to see if I could fix the Aiwa HS-J09 I bought new in 1986. One led to another. Now there are 21 of them. But I'm proud to say that although I monitor several auction sites, I have stopped making low-ball bids for cheap poor condition units. Hopefully I've kicked the habit I'm also happy to say that although I didn't buy any nice ones, I've only consigned two (10%) to unrepairable/donor status. Even some that I bought for parts and paid as little as $12 for, have ended up being repairable. Partly because of the recent availability of new spare parts and partly because of figuring out how to resolve difficult problems. Refurbishing low end units means I devote lots of hours to working on them without buying very many. I'm not interested in having them for display or having museum quality cosmetic ones that don't work. Now I'm focussed on optimizing the players I have, and buying the even more rare original accessories like mics and earphones. One thing I would do different at the start if I knew I was going to end up with this many, would be to buy a decent soldering iron and work stand/clamp/light/magnifier. Aiwa HS-J09 (3) Aiwa HS-J9 (10) Aiwa HS-J600 (2) Aiwa HS-J36 (3) Aiwa HS-J360 (1) Aiwa HS-J85 (1) Aiwa HS-J10 (1)
i don't want to fix them. i don't use them. oja, just bought a red f501... so, each has his own way of collecting.
Same here. I got back into it over the last 6 months. Wanting to get the ones that I sold some years ago but prices are quite high now. I doubt I will be able to get a WM-3EX again.
