   It is described as an "MM Cartridge Equaliser". I guess they mean a phono preamp. Some boomboxes and some turntables had one built in, but to link a standard turntable to a line input you need one.

   I should have done a little more reading, the RC-838 has onboard phono hookup, the RC-636 probably doesn't and would require the preamp. My brain was mush from doing work paperwork and I was looking for the matching RC-838 Turntable. Thanks Longman!
