Found some Sony and Aiwa Walkmans today and it's only 8.33am. All from one seller.

    And some new Philips earphones

Found a nice maroon coloured That's MG60 Metal Cassette this morning for 20p.

I also found this Akai 1700 in excellent condition and working. Paid £15. Portable with built in speakers. Very heavy though!

This is the fourth reel to reel I've bought in the wild. First was the Akai 1722, then a 1721, then a Toshiba I've still not tested as don't have the right cord, and now another Akai in the 1700. It came with one reel which I will hook up and listen to later to see what's on it.

I prefer the look of this 1700 compared to the 1721 and 1722 but this only has one VU meter which you can switch between L and R channels. The higher up models have two VU meters.

For some reason when I go to the new post page, some of these don't come up. That little AKAI is sweet Simon, everything looks very nicely put together, I bet the chrome around the counter is metal. I never see the little ones, I have a small Sony and kind of small Ampex but they were entry-level, that one looks nicer.

Not audio related but I thought Jorge would like these, I found a boatload of Tamiya Models still in the box. The older women said they were from the 70's and I bought about 1/2 of them for pretty cheap. When I was a kid our local cool hobby store had Tamiyas right at the door, hundreds of them, they seemed to be a step above a normal kit we'd buy and they always were more expensive. We'd drool over the tanks that could take a battery operated motor and move around the floor, so high-tech back then.

Some of the highlights are the JPS car, for some reason they always looked cool and when Jackie Stewart was calling the races on Saturday Afternoon on Wide World of Sports they got a lot of attention. The Tyrell P34 might be the best of the bunch, six wheels! yea look that car up, it was real! I have a soft spot for the tanks and the real cars, who makes a crappy Honda Model? Tamiya does! Most of these are mint unopened boxes, I'm dying to look inside and check one out.

Hi Mister X, yes the counter surround is a chromed metal rather than plastic. And the Volume knobs and Play FF/RW levers are metal too. On my later 1721 and 1722 models these have been replaced with plastic.

I like it! I ran into an old-timer that's travelled the world and really uses multi-band radios for what they were meant for. I was picking his brain on R2R and he said little AKAI was the fashizzle in the late 60's early 70's, he thought they were the best. I've got some AKAI and TEAC and the build quality is outstanding but the sonics need updating, I'd love to hear some of these restored back to original, hopefully I'll get some time this winter.

and don't forget Mr x's rules of thrifting....most R2Rs don't work unless the slack lever is up (that bar with about 2" of semi-circle movement) and Casio Keyboards have a different +/- power jack, you need to get a wall wart that you can rotate the polarity, other wise they are DOA. I've gotten some great deals with this knowledge.

What a great find. UK members will probably remember Beatties, a chain of model shops that used to sell model railways etc, and Tamiya kits. They would usually have offers on packages of a radio control car, radio, battery etc. You could have bought a nice boombox for around the same price though. Nowadays, if you have an unbuilt one of those they seem to go for the same price as a Gold Plated Walkman, to people who will never build them.

I think Beatties couldn't compete with computer and video games when they started to become more popular and take more of kids Pocket Money.

You are right that Tamiya kits were always very nice quality with no flash on them and everything fitting together perfectly.

I guess the reason for the little Hondas is that they are typical of the cars people drove back then in Japan so it would be natural to have a model of them.
I have models of three of my four previous cars. I have looked but failed to find one of the Nissan Sunny Coupe. For a long time the 300ZX was a car I dreamt of. They have probably all rusted away by now though.

The Tyrell six wheeler actually gets mentioned in a news report in one of Techmoan's recent videos.

Before the F1 cars there were six wheel coaches. A local company used one for one of the school runs

Growing up in the 70's and 80's we had it all, my neighborhood seemed well rounded, we never spent too much time on one hobby and we loved all of them. We had a few audio stores, a couple hobby stores and at least one computer store, we'd always have a biking destination trip and go to one of these gems and spend a good hour or two looking at everything. This thread reminds me of all of those awesome products we used to study in detail.

I found an AIWA HS-T120 today for 10 Euros. Can anyone advise what year this walkman is from and if there is a service manual or user manual anywhere. It appears to work but I will clean it up. Battery door is missing but for a tenner I dont mind. Its got Dolby and plays metal tapes.

Update- I gave it a clean and the radio works amazing but the tape doesnt move so its the belt I presume. I cant find much info apart from its in the 1989 catalogue and its the same as the HS-T150. Would anyone know if it has one or two belts?

I was wondering where you got the £69.99 from until I looked closer. £171 in 2018 money according to the Bank of England.
I remember Sevenoaks HiFi always advertised in What HiFi. good to see they are still going although like many retailers they now do Video as well.

Belts tend to be fairly generic. Just measure the paths and ask Marian for recommendations https://fixyouraudio.com/

Thanks for that Longman. Would it be easy to open that AIWA walkman to carry out that task?

I don't know as I don't own any Aiwas. See if you can find a service manual.

Found this today. A nice little Realistic Tape Control Center.

Three deck control and a Monitor switch which is handy for use with decks that don't already provide that function.

A handy unit. Now work out how old it is and how much it cost, although items like that tended to stay in the catalogue for years.

    http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/

In the UK I always used to joke that Maplin had turned into Tandy (the UK name for Radio Shack). Now we don't have either. All the Tandys turned into Carphone Warehouse years ago, while Maplin went bankrupt and the local Maplin store is now a Carpet shop, right next door to an existing Carpet shop !

I guess technology fans are the most likely to use the internet and there is more money to be made from carpets than electronics.

Thanks. I managed to remove 2 small belts last night both were stretched. I contacted Fixyouraudio so on we go.
