We never had anything that advanced. I recall taking a cutting from the Sunday Times about the launch of the PET in 1977 into school to show the head of maths as it was far more advanced than the schools Busicom 2017 computer. That used punch cards which did have the advantage that with the pre-perfed ones they bought that you could write your programs offline using just a pen to push the chaffs out.

It was such a nice looking unit compared to the minimal terminals that everyone had but I've never seen one in person, the Apple II came out and crushed the competition at least at the school level. There were quite a few Radio Shack TRS-80's around but not much else. I used to look through the classifieds to try to find a used one but never had any luck.

In the U.K. it was the opposite. I think the only time I have seen an Apple II was in a museum. The PET and TRS80 were both quite popular in colleges and business. I have used a couple of PETs. One was actually rebadged by high end test equipment manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz.

The PET pictured in the press release was in my opinion better looking. It turns out it was a wooden mock up. Since Commodore already had a factory making filing cabinets they realised they could make metal computer cases in the same factory.

I really like JVC Cassette Decks from this era, I've got a handful out in the shop and most work fine although the belts have gotten lumpy. Their styling was second to none, they perfected modern silver-face.

The Straits Times, 1979, I'd love to see one of those AIWA AD-6900.

AKAI GXC-310D from 1976 with dual capstans! I love the top loading decks but they lost the cosmetic wars to front loading decks.

AKAI followed with this gem, the GXC-570D from 1977, very similar to the Nakamichi Tri-Racers.

AKAI CS-55D from 1972 with "Invert-O-Matic" What's interesting is that the ad only shows AKAI 8-Track Players

From 1985, Nakamichi was still cranking out some monsters, this is a rare newspaper ad!

Check out this AIWA AD-6900U from 1978, anybody played with the model? It syncs with the matching turntable, what a great feature.
