JVC DD-5, it's interesting they used DD just like Sony, this is from 1981, who was first?

Looking at the Nakamichi 1000ZXL Limited, this is got to be the most Gordy Hi-Fi component ever made?

If you have the matching car it all makes sense!

Direct Drive or Disk Drive? Most likely direct, don’t know who was first though.

    Just found this: https://insidehifi.blogspot.com/2014/04/jvc-dd-5.html

Given what I see in the picture @Mister X posted, it's a direct drive. It can be seen there's a PCB next to the flywheel, typical of a direct drive deck.
Flywheel has a magnetic ring, acting as the rotor of the motor, while the PCB has coils on it. Inside the coils are hall sensors, that provide the feedback loop, reading the speed.

Wow&flutter spec on this Victor is 0.021% WRMS, insanely low !
It's also rare to see a deck with the actual cassette deck on the right on the unit, not on the left.

Very low W&F, only detectable for trained audiophiles!
The cassette compartment on the right, always wondered why not more decks from Japanese manufacturers had it.

I was just pointing out the nomenclature "DD" was being used as part of the decks name, not the actual mechanics.

Most of the JVC Decks I have, around a handful, have the tray on the right side with either analog or LED meters on the left side. Without looking in the shop, they are one of the only ones that I can remember that did this. I think I pulled these ads from Popeye, The Magazine For City Boys, they pop up on the internet once in awhile but get pulled down pretty quickly. The magazine is very well put together and the ads from the 70s-80s are a blast from the past.

Wasn't DD only used for models with the direct or disc drive mechanism? The nomenclature more or less indicates the technical capabilities.

Technics from 1980, I love the look of these Technics Decks, I think they nailed it with the push-buttons and sliders, some of the other manufacturers equipment ended up looking "cheap" when they replaced the knobs and switches in the 80's.

We all thought digital music on long playing VHS players was the next big thing but it never really caught on in the consumer market. Here's some neat stuff from Technics, the SV-100 and his friends.

Sony TC-FX500R from 1982, with the cool model number it must be great! The Auto Reverse Font looks the same as Toshiba used on the RT-200S, which came first?

Some of the AIWA Decks are going for silly money now, here's the AIWA AD-R550 from 1985

Wow, check out this TEAC A-400 from 1976, this is right around when horizontal got huge and tape decks actually looked mean! Check out the vertical tape transport and the rotating controls, this might be the first and only time this was used. I bet there's a ton of long metal rods behind those dials, I'm dying to take one apart, anybody own one of these?

I love the concept but haven't found one of these yet to try out, the B I C T-3 from 1979. I think I read that initially Philips didn't want to "license" these because of the speed change feature, I'm not sure what happened.

Just like the BIC's above, this Marantz SD 3000 from 1980 had two speeds!
