Face masks work! From 1975, this is super cool, I'd love to see one of these kits for tape repair work.

BASF was making a huge push in 1975 for their cassette lines

Some more BASF Cassette Tapes from 1975, the added red coloring for a black and white magazine would have been big money back in the 70's

I must get me some BASF tapes, thank you for the reminder! When actually recording from LPs and CDs (in early 90-ies in Chicago), it was Sony, Maxell and TDK CrO2 and Metals for me, never noticed any BASF in our local United Audio Center @ Clark & Diversey

Every once in awhile I run into a retiree from 3M (Scotch) that worked on the media lines. One of the guys told me that BASF was the standard that 3M strove for. BASF never had a big footprint here compared to Maxell or TDK, but those companies really went after the college students and the word of mouth was magic.

On a side note, one of the guys I met this summer was responsible for putting in new tape manufacturing equipment, one of the interesting things he told me was that they had a full time employee whose only job was to sharpen the rotary blades, that sliced the wide "metal formulation" tape, down to 1/4". He said the metal formulation was hell on the cutters and they'd get dull extremely fast.

Ampex from 1980 with the Bee Gees. This was pretty daring and most likely wouldn't be done in the US, the Bee Gees were hated along with anything "disco" around this time and the music fell off a cliff. This is from Electronics Australia Magazine and is also four-color, very expensive to do back then when the rest of the magazine was mostly black and some red.

For some reason BASF seemed to be more popular as video cassettes here. Here are some old tapes I sold late last year. I still have plenty of my own. BASF always made a big deal of them being Chrome, as you can see on the packaging.

Back to Audio Cassettes it seems Philips used BASF tape for the very first cassettes

I wonder if they continued to use it and if there was some kind of agreement to not compete against a major customer (which wouldn't have applied in the case of VHS or Betamax).

I have a few of those BASF E 180s around here, I kept a box just in case I needed some tapes to mess around with. One of the 3M old-timer engineers I talked with said BASF was the standard they were trying to achieve, they actually had meetings together but I can't remember what they discussed.

This is a neat tape, the BASF 90 Maxima Design Edition from 1989 in a Polish Magazine. I think I read that clear plastic was difficult because the rotating hubs would bind with the clear panel.

Memorex from 1981, Kansas State Collegian, they might have had some nice tapes but the ones I bought were all crap. Was there some sleepers with Memorex? They had a cool name but I only saw them in discount stores.

BASF from 1968, they really advertised heavily in the old days, then TDK followed by Maxell. The extra red color in the ads would have been a big expense back then.
