Not an advert but some Argos prices from 1982
    Argos Tapes 1092.jpg
The prices explain why I have so many Sony tapes. Cheaper than Philips although you did have a chance to win a VCR with the Philips. Even if they weren't I would have expected the Contex tapes to be Type Zeros. A shame I didn't spot the Reel to Reel cassettes back then and stocked up. They always used them in publicity shots but this is the first time I have seen them for sale in a catalogue.

Those BASF Tapes are really nice looking, TDK's were still in the stone ages. I don't think I knew RTR cassette tapes existed until getting on this forum years ago, they were the true grail item only a few members had.

A neat 1971 ad for Maxell Displays, dealer cost $1.96 USD per tape plus you get the cool Seiko Watch!

Have Philips ever made tape? I know they sold R2R and tape cassettes, but did they make tape itself? From what I could find, they used 0.15-inch tape, which already had existed, although I am not sure for what specific product this tape was developed.

I had read before that they started off using BASF tape which was the only type that would meet their requirements given the narrow tracks and low tape speed.

The shells were obviously Philips. As for the width all tape is made on much wider reels (1 foot (30 cm) +) and is then easily sliced down to whatever width is required.
Whether they started to make their own tape once cassettes started to sell by the million I don't know.

I'm pretty sure BASF made the tape for Philips, I had a long conversation with a local engineer that designed the 3M Tape Factories world-wide. I asked him about the early tapes and I'm almost positive he said BASF was the benchmark and set the early standards, along with Philips.

Most of these companies private-labeled their tapes, one of the surprising exemptions might be Marantz, I've got photos and small articles about with their tape duplication factories. I don't know if they made the tape but they were definately buying it by the pancake and rolling it.

3M Scotch Master Cassette 1978, this is a very interesting promotion, tapes were still more than double this price but it might have been a good deal.
