This is bizarre co-branding, Memorex distributed by Pioneer? I'm sure Memorex had some good formulations but all I saw as a kid was the cheap dime-store stuff that sounded like putting a bag on your head. Even the case for these looks well thought out.

I just got one of these beautiful Sony Recorders, here's the matching C60 cassette tape. Cool ad from the early 70's!

Two from a U.K. national newspaper back in 1990.
Woolworths tying up with Maxell to try and get some Christmas sales
    1990 Maxell.jpg

This is the one that surprised me. A full page advert for Sony Tapes. Most full page newspaper adverts tended to be very busy showing dozens of products for sale, whether audio or furniture.

You could probably buy the Sony HF tapes in Woolworths as an alternative to Maxell but the Metal would only be in HiFi shops.

...and the Metal Ads were usually only in HiFi Magazines. I have to believe those metal tapes were big money in 1990 but some users wanted state of the art to copy their new CD libraries. It was way out of my price range just for the tapes, let alone a deck to record with.

The newspaper archive I am looking at only shows today's newspaper from years in the past. With Christmas on the horizon in 1989 there were lots of adverts aimed at gift buyers.

I love the Christmas Gift Sets, the NOS is really difficult to find.

Dymo to label your tapes, interesting ad.... We loved those Dymo's when I was a kid, there was something about putting labels on everything that was exciting.

What is she wearing up top ? No wonder the distorted the picture.

Back to more mundane adverts in 1991, how many adverts for cassettes did Woolworth's pay for in the run up to Christmas ?
    1991 Maxell.jpg
The fate of Woolworth's in the U.K. was determined by trends in media.
They expanded CD, VHS, and DVD sales, and became a wholesaler for other shops.
Then everyone started watching satellite TV and downloading their music from Napster.

In the same 1991 newspaper, Asda, a supermarket that is still with us had a neat promotion on TDK Ds

Woolworth's is kind of like our Target, just get them in the door, pretty soon a $2 cassette purchase turns into $50 of swag.

A cassette tape ad with a difference. Beer and Cassettes. Unfortunately we are a bit late for the offer.

In 1990 Woolworths were still convinced that blank cassettes were the ideal stocking filler. Strangely I haven't seen any newspaper adverts from them which weren't media related.

Very early Kodak C-60 from 1971, I had no idea they had a tape line.
