1984, everyone had a Walkman or boombox and music was everywhere, videos were king and MTV set the standard. The big bands had a "World Premier Video" which was hyped by MTV for weeks until the big night when the brand new video was shown. Van Halen's Jump might have been the biggest release at a time when there were a ton of mega-bands and singers.

Sure the song is over-played and a little goofy now but back then when it premiered on new years eve, everyone was glued to cable television patiently waiting. The first reaction? The synthesizer, that was a wild intro, and then the colors, so bright and vivid and much different than most rock videos. All of this was ground-breaking at the time when we loved the videos as much as the music.

Too Cool4 ,I was interested to hear you were a high jumper. I was as well in the late sixties/ early seventies with a terrible straddle but I managed 2..05 metres nevertheless ( 6 feet 9 inches ) and jumped at the Commonwealth Games In 1970 and World Student Games in the same year. What was your best height

Hi Philip Taylor, you did better than me i did not quite make 2M only 1.96M. I was not very tall, in fact i was always the shortest at competitions but i still won most. I am only 5’ 8” now, i was a lot shorter as an under 15. I did jump for my county. I also won the all England independent schools 1 year.

That is a coincidence as I was second in the English Schools twice but I went to Montreal Expo in Canada for a Schools Tri- Meet with France and Canada and I jumped 2 metres there so I must have got a bit stronger. Which school did you go to ? I went To Rock Ferry on the Wirral. We had a good PE Master who took an interest but I had to jump in the Gym and land on coir matting! I was only six foot but I remember a French jumper who was about your height and he had jumped 7’ 9”. He held the world record at the time for height difference.

Oh dear I am not surprised I had a little coaching with Dennis Watts but they could not change my technique. I did the straddle with a bent leading leg and took offf from the sole of my left foot that ankle has now collapsed with no mid section and my hips and knees have suffered as well,
All the best for Christmas and a Happy New Year Philip
