JVC Stereo Stack from 1980. I'm a big fan of their tape decks from this era, I have a handful out in the shop and can pull any one down and they usually still work after sitting years, plus they just looked good, compact but with huge VU meters and nice feeling logic controls.

Since JVC invented VHS they were probably investing their money in designing VCRs and consequently were leaders in that market.
    They were certainly advertising heavily.
I read somewhere that by the 1980s 70% of Japan's consumer electronics exports were VCRs so it made sense to spend all the R&D money on them.

Here is a U.K. JVC advert from 1978 when VCRs were the latest (and expensive) thing to buy
    JVC VHS.jpg
a TV advert from around the same date

and a couple of American adverts

Funny how the guy with the giant portable VCR is being made out to be the cool one.

    The two bottom ads disappeared?

When I search JVC, the most ads by far are for VHS Cameras and some of the nicer video recording equipment they put out. The JVC Cameras I remember were always a little more commercial hi-tech looking then the competition but they were also expensive.

A young Doc Emmett Brown would be impressed, while the older version bought one.

It's too bad we don't hear much more about the designers of all of this equipment, there was so many different designs from every company, year after year, check out JVC from 1977, Sony had some beautiful portable TVs but these new offerings from JVC would have been a young kids dream. The build quality alone is amazing although they can be pretty heavy.

to be fair i love jvc but the only good sounding traditional boxes they made were the m90 and some of the 1980's 3 piece llike the 33 and 55
the only good one from the 70's was the 390en

I just crossed one of your recommendations off my list today Radio! Which one is the 390en? I don't think I'll ever find an M90 in the wild, 20 years and still haven't even seen one.

yup that is the one Son....it's a better sounding box than the much over rated m70 but not as loud, i would also recommend the pc5 but the flaps always brake off those bloody things lol
