What site are you going to? These are over on worldradiohistory.com, I also search in archive.org and a ton of newspaper sites worldwide. So far everything is free but I might step up and get on newspapers.com.

I love going through the old magazines and newspapers, it's interesting how history is kind of repeating the 70's over again. It's amazing how similar the "strife" of the 70's mirrors the man-made "strife" of the 2020's. Luckily this forum is a great escape but I have to go through hundreds of those articles as well.

thanks i somehow ended up in the wrong place, these old ads are all very cool and interesting... I like the explanation of "type A vs type B" amplifiers in the one ad too!! education (biased certainly) in an ad!!

I was in college 74-78, these are contemporary to what i remember... like the first TI calculators...

I was a very young kid but a radio and record player was an important part of life back. We used to love going to Sears, JCPenny's, Wards, etc and first, looking at the toys, and then we'd head over to electronics. We thought everyone would turn into a genius with calculators. TI's were the neatest thing ever with the engineering functions but they were way out of reach, thankfully Casio had some cool ones that didn't cost as much.

If you haven't been on www.WorldRadioHistory.com that's a great place to start, archive.org has thousands of magazines but the search engine stinks, you have to stumble on 80% of the material with luck. Sign up for a free account on archive.org, there's a ton of material you can view, some of this is part of the microfilm archives, there's lots in there as well.

Ha, agreed, "suitcase" small record players... when I was a kid i remember riding with my teenage uncles to go get the Beatles first album... does anyone have any of the old Stereo Review mags from 70s and 80s? for their articles, where a lot of this equipment was reviewed? I couldn't find a site by that name anymore just googling... I'll look on those sites you suggested! thanks!

never mind, found stereo review on that site!! thanks! Exactly what I was looking for! Review of JVC KD-V6 in Mar 1985 issue! Who puts all these magazines on there?!?! Thank goodness someone does!

You are right about archive.org search engine... I searched for anything "JVC catalog" and got a list of "YES concerts"... I love YES, but not sure how that search engine works... haha

I would like to explain a little about this biphonic system from jvc .. How it works electronically ... I have not taken the 828 schematic which is a bit more complex and looking at the schematic uses a chip to do this function ... But I found the Biphonic system also in the schematic of the Rc 656 lb which is this in the picture ... Well I try to explain ... starting from the orange circle, the potentiometer of channel R, the signal (red arrow) enters the amplifier chip from pin 7 .... and exits from pin 2 amplified towards the speakers ( red arrow) But one part (green arrow) goes back to a small preamplifier composed of a single transistor. On the output of this there is the S505-4 Stereo - Biphonic switch ... as seen in the diagram and in the Stereo position, so this part of the signal stops .... But when you switch on Biphonic the signal reaches (blue arrow ) pin 13 of the amplifier ... This amplifier chip AN7146 is a double amplifier and pin 13 is part of channel L ... not R we were examining ... Same thing happens with S505-3 channel L (purple arrow ) which enters the amplifier on pin 6 which is on channel R ..... In practice, the two channels are inverted ... So while listening we will also hear channel L on channel R (with a slight delay) almost not audible and vice versa ... on channel L we will also hear R (with a slight delay) the result is that of having an expansion of the sound .. The test that can be done is to put a signal only on one channel .. in stereo mode you will hear it to the right or to the left according to the selected channel ... passing only one channel on Biphonic l or you will hear both left and right. All this theoretically because I do not have a jvc boombox to try on the contrary if maybe someone can confirm ... I hope I have explained myself and helped to better understand this system

There's a guy over on AudioKarma posting about Biphonic, last spring his thread had photos of a recent recording set-up. Of course when I search for anything I can't find the thread.

Dfcruiser, google's search engine is the best that I know for trying to find the nuggets on archive.org, type "jvc catalog site: archive.org" into the search bar and you'll get some hits.
For me the 2nd page down is this https://archive.org/details/KatalogJVC1979RFN Then start hitting random links and you never know what you'll find.

Although it is U.K. based https://retromash.com/argos/ is still worth a look at for calculators etc from back in the day. I was at secondary school during that same period and the TI-30 was easily the most popular calculator, even if the only exam we were allowed to use a calculator in was Chemistry Practical.

Regarding small record players I was chatting to a friend who was born in 1965 and asked her what her favourite childhood item was. Her answer was the record player her sister had in her bedroom.

@MisterX: thats a great search string... in fact it seems like since a couple of sites have upgraded, their site search engines don't seem to work as well as before, so I've started searching from google when i'm looking for something... but your suggestion gave even better hits! Thanks!

@Silver965 : nice technical explanation of BiPhonic... that sounds like a really complex system!

I'm going to look for my wife's small "record player"! Hadn't thought about that in years, I don't even know what brand it might be. These posts reminded me of that thing! She has a stack of 45's with it too!

Still have my old TI SR-50 (SR=slide rule), i bought in 1974, first full scientific calculator (with trig functions and one memory) from TI... everyone in class had to buy one! and really expensive! $170 per wikipedia, i thought it was more... i had to pitch the battery pack, started to leak, so not sure if it would even power up!

When the boombox and mini-stereo mixed their DNA, we got the mega-mini-stereo!

What do you think Radio, I always hated these over the top models but did they sound any good?

For a kid's room they were probably the fashizzle and oddly they rarely show up for sale these days.
