This is NOT a Sanyo in any way internally! It is a low cost generic unit sold under many brand names & in silver as well as black! It's not a bad unit either & clearly inspired by the Sanyo 7900K! It's inside where the differences are very apparent! They are not high quality but they are not bad either........ Looks like this unit was made by Conic - Indeed they have their own version of it! Here's the UK Triumph model sold through Curry's over here in the early 1980's!
Great information nickeccles, that's the first head to head photo I've seen and didn't realize how different even looks-wise they are. I was so confused I was thinking about the even smaller Sanyo Three-Piece that is very similar.
glad to see you buying again Nick lad, as for me I'm trying to sell all my boxes lad at least the working ones, i just don't use them much anymore which is sad i know
It would make sense not to use a high quality unit for a movie prop. Thanks for sharing @nickeccles !
just to continue ... there is one for sale ... and all the written in ... German (I could be wrong) Stereo radio cassette recorder metal mbo. made in Germany | eBay
This Conic arrived yesterday & today was spent restoring & repairing it! Very little to do just a new belt & real good clean up! It's in very nice condition for a 1982 machine am very pleased with it!
Mmm ...We should start making a list of brands ... Radiotone .... Triumph .... MBO .... Conic .... I think there are still some more around the world ...
In the early days of the forum, Jens of Germany used to know everything about boomboxes and made a CD packed with photos and information. I think it identified most of the AKA's (also known as). There's a few older members on here with it, they'd be able to provide more information. I don't have it but from all of my reading I'd say Conic is a contender as the builder. At one of my jobs in the 90's we used to get catalogs of generic boomboxes made in Asia, you had to order several at a time but they would put any name you wanted on them.
I have a few of these Sanyo clones, namely Siemens Club RM816 (which is looking similar to the Conic above with the square speaker grills) Nippon RR012 (looking similar to the MBO above with round speaker grills) Sanwa 7096, with round speaker grills, available either in silver or in brown. They sound great in my opinion, expecially when listening to voice. I would love to find out who the manufacturer was! The Sanyo still has AKA's with the same set of functions, the Elin 5322 for example. Most of these boxes had 'Mini & Slim' in their name which makes it easy to google them without knowing the brand and modelname they were sold under.
