I checked and BSR stopped making turntables in 1985. The ones they made all had a solid metal chassis which didn't fit with the trend for lightweight plastic systems. They did diversify into making power supplies and modulators for home computer manufacturers (like Acorn) to use. That division kept going until it was bought by Emerson.

BSR also made some cool EQ's in the 80's, maybe longer. I don't think I have one of their TTs around here.

Check out this Technics CX-DP10 from 1988, their car stereos are pretty rare over here, I've never seen one but love the look of the few I've seen.

Never seen a Technics car radio before, but we used to get Panasonic ones here. A lot of Volkswagens had them as an option in the mid to late 80's and into the 90's before they switched to Sony. I have some old VW brochures in the shed here at work, I'll see if I have any with the radios in them.

A cool article from Playboy Magazine 1978, this was right when car stereos were getting really interesting. Panasonic was really leading the way and that early design was one of the all time best.

I kind of like those Yamahas but haven't bought one, I've never seen that top one but it went for big money, I'd love to see one up close.

Pioneer had so much experience with the market and other products that closely resembled car stereos, it doesn't surprise me that put out nice equipment.

    Pioneer TS-X9 Surface Mount Speakers

My first car audio system was comprised of an all-Pioneer component line-up. Still have them all.

Sweet! Man that stuff was expensive, remember when we used to joke about the stereos being more than the car?

Top-tier car audio gear back in the late 70's to early 80's could run you up plenty of dollars. My first car was a 1970 Buick Skylark Custom and it saw plenty of stereo upgrades throughout the time of purchase in 1979 into the 80's. I sold the Buick in 1992.

And an interesting side bar, is that this past February I became reunited with a lot of Pioneer car stereo components I sold back in the 90's at one of my garage sales.

Did you ever have any Marantz? What was the feeling of those units back then?

I didn't own any Marantz car audio. Most of my local retail stores didn't seem to have them in stock or on display back then.
