Just this one that's been floating around for years, I think your's was off of your local site Trove. Neat unit, I have yet to find one, it was also branded Quasar, I think Boodakhan has several he's posted in the kangaroo thread.

    Thanks.
I saw it on Gumtree. Aud$50 seemed a pretty decent price I thought.

there’s a Kangaroo thread?, I’ll have to find that.

I absolutely hate their analogue tuning implementation. And they used to use it in everything up to when they went PLL. What were they thinking?
I picked up one of these for €40 at a boot sale and has the same slide tuning with the fine tune wheel.

Can't complain because it was cheap and fully working.

Fun fact: If you remove the grills from that thing, you'll find the speakers are mounted off-center

I was wondering why it had a mediocre sound.

    Those Panasonic's baffle me.
If you choose the CD version, you get a crap analogue tuner but logic controlled tape, but if you choose the double tape model you get a digital PLL tuner but manual tape controls.
It would have saved them a lot of expense if they put the best features of both models into one great boombox.
Which one cost more? The DX650 or the CT900?

If I had to guess I'd say the CD model, they were still pretty expensive in the late 80's. Maybe Panasonic could only keep the cost down by using analog on the CD model?

I've got a non-CD version, it pretty much lives in storage, just doesn't do anything for me. I've seen others for sale for cheap around here, left them for somebody else.

I think they sound great, they smoke any 1-piece boombox, that's for sure.
Not as good as a Telefunken, though

From 1981, this has the super-rare Panasonic RS-J1, We've seen the Technics Version, Techmoan did a review on it (maybe after seeing it posted on this forum?). This kind of clears up that it's a portable component tape deck but it's still odd, the guy in the boat would probably rather have a Walkman. The RS-J3 is one of my early favorites but it's heavy with lots of metal parts, it also has RCA outs on it.
