We rarely see advertising for the Sony TCS Line, from 1980, the Sony TCS-300 which also records, I think this was a big of a deal as the small Walkman, before this most portable (field) recorders were pretty large.

Some goodies from 1981 Singapore, check out the JVC RC-S5, a cool little boombox, I think the price x .75 will get you USD, so even back then this was a really expensive boomer.

That is an interesting Sanyo advert. In the Selfridges catalogue listing I posted earlier it lists the Stereo decoder for the suitcase style system as being an optional extra. I guess back then the stereo decoder circuitry was so expensive they didn't want to price themselves out of the market by including it as standard.

JVC was on top of the world in 1981, here's some of their electronics from Singapore, it looks like the M80 was the king of the hill at the time, it's odd that the M90 doesn't appear in most ads.

Yea, some of these ads are eye-openers for me Longman. I remember stereo for us got big with FM radio around 1978 but before that we didn't see alot of it. Most teens had some sort of TT with two speakers but nice equipment or even headphones with stereo were pretty rare.

One of my favorites, the JVC RC-828W makes an early sighting in 1977! Maybe one of the members can clarify the "W", I thought it stood for dual tape decks but this is really early for that.

It is often what bands the radio has. Seeing high end boomboxes with just AM and FM bands looks strange to us in the U.K. Having at least four bands was the sign of a medium price box here, despite the fact that the only use for SW on most was showing your friends that you could pick up Radio Moscow.
