Mr X. It amazes me how people walked around with those. Over here I didn't see many people with them. Where I was anyway. That wm-4 which was the first one I bought is still one of my favourites and use it still.

I don't think many people walked around with them except from room to room. My Mother bought a Sanyo radio cassette in about 1973 to use at school. At the time it was about 20 years ahead of the schools Audio equipment. That Sanyo was used to provide the music at a hall for school performances in front of 100 parents. I recall taping Tomita "Ballet of the chicks in their shells" for her class of of 5 year olds to dance to on stage. She later upgraded to a stereo Sony Radio Cassette and I got to use the Sanyo with my ZX81 computer.

Rather amusingly she thought people who had music centres with separate speakers in their lounge were "pretentious".

It depends on what your talking about, there was a lot of Walkmans out there, just like mp3 players today but boomboxes were different. There was always the guys running around with them turned up load but not a lot of them. Then there was the beach boomboxes, being near Lake Michigan we saw a ton of them. And as a former skateboarder, we used to take something around with us when were were looking for a area to grind. We had a few colleges by me that were perfect for setting up a spot with music but there were other groups that would also have boomers out playing.

I think Longman is right, most just sat on a desk or cabinet, one of the biggest reasons was battery-life sucked and they were expensive, also some of these were pretty expensive and you didn't want something to happen to them.

The Pioneer SK Boombox Series from 1980, shortly after this they started coming out with radically different designs. These are all beautiful and vey nicely built, a great addition for any collection.

The Bone Fone from 1980, one man's million-dollar dream that was killed by the Walkman that was released shortly after. I've posted the inventor's book, it's very interesting, in one of my threads.

Some more Hitachi's from 1980, they had a pretty strong effort in the early 80's with some very nice looking boomboxes.

It's interesting how the brands come in groups, even with multiple dealers, there's usually only one advertiser per issue.

A bit like Smartphones today. The reason my Mother decided she wanted a Sanyo radio cassette was that a student teacher doing here teaching practice in the school received one for her 21st birthday. My Mother was so impressed she decided she wanted one. I wonder if the student teacher (who will be retired by now) still has hers. I still have my Mothers, still in the original box where it was always kept when not in use. Last time I tried it a few years ago it still worked.
