We still have Micro Center and Best Buy, MC is fun if you like computers or even building your own, they have everything but the chain is small. I've never liked the Best Buy Experience, you used to have obnoxious salesguys crowding you, now nobody helps you. The shopping experience is boring, you just want to grab what you need and get out as quickly as possible.

I'm not sure what happened, you'd think a traditional audio/visual/computer store with a cool atmosphere would do great (without pushy sales guys) but most died off.

More AIWA from 1982, USD. Tapes at $3.99 each! Big money back then, for a few dollars more you could buy a prerecorded tape.

A neat radio from AIWA 1968, these were pretty expensive when new. Most kids had a transistor radio but most were from Hong Kong and pretty cheap although they pulled in the local AM stations just fine.

Most people seem to be happy with a smartphone on a two year contract, although in the U.K. quite a few of the "Carphone Warehouse" shops are now a section in Curry's so what used to be four distinct DSG chains (Dixons selling Cameras and AV gear, Curry's selling White Goods and AV Gear, PC World selling computers, and Carphone Warehouse selling phones) are now in the same out of town Curry's warehouses selling all of these items.

A related question. What is going on with TVs ? I was looking at https://www.richersounds.com/tv-pro...tvs/all-tvs.html?product_list_order=price_asc and you can spend anywhere between £170 and £29999 on one. The latter makes @Radio Raheem 's Celebrity seem like a bargain basement product.

TVs are like audio, the high end is usually better but the gap at the top really starts to narrow. Most people would like to be up there but unfortunately space and money are always a factor. I feel like some of the older TVs were statement pieces, Sony built a giant TV a few decades ago, it might have been several stitched together but it got so much "free" publicity that I'm sure it paid for itself.

Modern TVs are really modular, I've read the new screens are cut out of giant rolls, any size you want, then you add a few circuit boards, speakers, power supply and you have a TV. The manufacturing process has really cut costs on home-owner screens.

that is exactly what a modern tv is Mr x....my 65" tv by panasonic was only 300 and that was to much,,,,i'm starting to think my celebrity boxes were worth 1000 back then as i remember panasonic portable dvd players that were the same cost at the same time, i'm just stuck in the early 90's where a great technics stack system was only about 1300£

What they've engineered with TVs is truly amazing, even with the price dropping like a rock they still keep getting better. Remember the little Sonic T-Amps a few years ago, they were supposed to sound amazing for a few bucks? I built a little system for a friend a few years ago, wonder how it's doing.

On the larger screens you might be right. Some time ago the race was on to top 100" in either LCD or Plasma. LG are now up to 325"
    https://www.lg.com/us/business/direct-view-led-home-cinema-display
As the Daily Star points out that is taller than a Giraffe ! They also reckon it will cost £100000. None of that £30000 paupers stuff.

I would guess that is similar in size to two advertising hoardings nearby which have been replaced with LED screens recently. However I would guess those are about 1080P. Even from a car you can make out the individual LEDs if you look closely.

What do they use at big concerts now? I have a love/hate relationship with them, if your far away they're great, but if you have good seats they're really distracting. Don't get me started on TOOL, they play crappy videos the whole concert and nobody moves on stage.
