Sony 1993, USD, you can see how expensive MD was compared to a decent Walkman, what normal kid had the money for a player and shelf recorder? I was buying used cars in great condition for the same amount.

 

I think they were trying to get smaller and make them more affordable, just think of the excitement when seeing the WM-2 for the first time and it being a better deal.

I'm not sure if the Tandy is a Sharp, I've got both out in the shop and I think there are some slight differences.

That's a small phone, we had the case unit, it was like 12" x 12" x 5." They were cheap, maybe $100 USD but service was like $30/month with a very limited service area, otherwise roaming was ultra-expensive.
