I just picked up a Sony Mindisc player/record MZ-R909 and want to know what kind of cable do I need to purchase in order to be able to record from my minidisc into my computer? I look at the Line-Out option on my minidisc player and I can't figure out what type of cable will suit. Any help and advice, much appreciated.
When you want to record from the M-R909 TO another device, use the analog out (headphone jack, 3.5mm) to something else like a 3.5mm or 2xRCA (tulip, red-white usually). Recording from another device TO the minidisc device can be done via optical (mini-toslink on the R909) or analog (again 3.5mm on the R909). https://www.minidisc.wiki/equipment/sony/portable/mz-r909
Thanks Emiel. But I want to record from the minidisc into my computer. So what cable is needed to do this?
As this is not a NetMD capable device, you simply use a analog cable (3.5mm jack) from the headphone out to your PC's input as described above: most likely it is a female 3.5mm port in your PC. It looks like you can set the sound output to headphones output and true line-out. For the best quality you might want to try both options; however, using MD devices with my amplifier, I always set them to line-out. If I remember correctly, you can only set it to line-out when the 7-pin connector (on the remote) is not inserted.
Thank you. My computer only has USB inserts, so I assume will need to find a cable that has 3.5mm jack for headphone jack of minidisc and the other end with a USB for the computer insert, right?
I have just done exactly that with the Roxio kit I posted in this thread https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/show-your-newest-vintage-electronic-entry.8010/page-10 I initially tried using Audacity and a different converter but ended up with a quiet recording even with the MD player at maximum volume, I didn't actually try using the PCs Mic input, assuming a headphone output would overload it. p.s something like this would probably do the job
