My Sanyo M9998 cost $600 back in 1979. A poor investment had it been bought for collector value. (An Aiwa HS-J9 just sold for about $300 on Buyee. There would be another $50 in fees on top of that. It was in top cosmetic condition but had battery compartment corrosion and of course the tape drive didn't work. I think I'm done buying from Buyee. The bids just go too high.)
I offered $6.00 for one of the bogus ads on eBay for the unit I bought off and received from Buyee in Japan. Just to see what would happen. The offer was immediately rejected. Probably there is a minimum offer and anything less is rejected without consideration. I'm not willing to risk more for what looks like a scam. I tried to report the matter to eBay, but it appears there is no way to report a problem until after a purchase.
Ok here is a parts unit. Aiwa HS-J9 p1159918873 https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/p1159918873 1,200 yen = US$ 8.28 Closing Time JST 8 Nov 2024 20:02:33 Aiwa HS-J9 p1159918873 https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/p1159918873 1,200 yen = US$ 8.28 Once again going for cheap $
It has a missing tape direction window and broken battery lid latch. Normal stuff. Plus some corrosion and no doubt it needs a belt and auto reverse repair. Worst, the whole equalizer panel is missing. The glue dries out on these and usually they are partly loose. I've never before seen one completely missing. Missing this vital part, which would be extremely difficult to replicate, consigns this one to donor status. I suppose someone could buy it to use it, because the missing panel does not affect operation. But it's no good for display. A cassette door from an HS-J09/600 would not do because the J9 has TV channel reception with some tuner graphics on the cassette door. Unfortunately donor quality HS-J9/09/600 units on Buyee sell for $100-150, with serious bidders coming out of the woodwork as the auction ends.
You buy something from Japan, you're taking your chances. Not only do they lack thorough descriptions, but I and my friends have received more broken items from Japan than we've ever received from within the US. Doesn't matter what kind of shipping or broker you use. I quit a couple years ago.
Aiwa HS-J9 p1159918873 went for about $120, plus about $20 shipping etc. About twice as much as it would be worth to me.
When I buy or win an item from buyee, I have it wrapped. When really nice, individually, but always consolidated and protectively wrapped as a whole. On the total amount, it is a little bit more. Else, roll the dice.
