Love my little collection of That's cassettes. Wish I had more tbh. The MR-XPro's are absolute stellar performers!
Those are cool looking cases, I'm surprised they weren't bigger over here but TDK and Maxell ruled. Found another big two page 4-color ad from 1985 for the metal tapes, anybody got some of these?
Found on Twitter Japan, sorry, don't know the poster's name. Check out the last page with the testing equipment and the audio room! They sure love JBL Speakers over there.
I just checked a random copy of U.K. Magazine Hi Fi News (December 1987) and found I actually bought quite a few back in the day, and looking on ebay.co.uk it seems quite a lot of other people did https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285011279263 I recall that they were typically sold in HiFi shops. I used to go in Radford HiFi on the Top Tapes list. In contrast Type 1 TDK and Sony tapes were advertised in teen magazine Smash Hits and sold by the likes of Woolworths and Argos. p.s. Look at the price of the Floppy Discs in the Top Tapes advert.
i had a sealed metal one,,,,,i gave it away free its just a blank cassette guys lol all the squirrel shit on these forums and ebay i just don't get it lol went to buy a rare boombox for a fortune but guess what it wasn't even working lol...move along
Thanks for the article, and I never really heard of this brand of cassette tape. After looking at the prices on the auction site, I won't be looking anymore. Still tough to beat the Maxell XLII tape from back in the day, and of course there are some others. These are pricey, but not so bad that they're not affordable in my opinion. I even bought some recorded on once Maxell type iv metal tapes that record very well also. I think many of our decks were calibrated from the factory with the Maxells and that's part of the reason they sound so good. I know when I go to set the bias on my Akai deck the Maxells are simple to set up.
I have some metal tapes also, but they are more money and I did not care for the Sony metal-SR tapes, and it was a little funky trying to get them biased correctly. The Maxell metal are better, and I went and bought a bunch of the Maxell metal, they were used recorded on once, but I feel that they record over excellent. I still feel better Maxell chrome tapes give you 90% of a good metal tape, and although not cheap, they're cheaper than the metal ones.
I tried Maxell Matel Vertex, don't like it so never tried another. I don't like it's musical presentation. I never rerecord on an cassette and for me would never buy used cassettes. Never tried Sony Metal SR, so can't say what they are like. I do like the Sony Super Metal Master, very very smooth sounding cassette. I don't have problems Biasing up tapes, since the Nakamichi CR-7 does an amazing job by itself.
That's awesome, I will have to try a couple of the other brands of metal type iv. It's not that the Sony's weren't good, they just were not easy to bias, the Maxell metal are much easier. Going to pick up some TDK's today possibly and give them a whirl. So expensive everywhere.
Do you find that the TDK type iv that you posted are as good as the Maxell type iv or possibly better? Possibly more high-end extension?
I don't think it's more high frequency extension, i just prefer the presentation of the MA-XG. I feel the Vertex throws music at me, the MA-XG presents music to me and Super Metal Master is just silky Smooth. I do like Maxell's Chrome, MX is nice.
Has anyone had any luck with the new tapes that are out? Not very much love for the couple that are on the market now.
Understood, every comparison that I've ever heard the nod always goes to the NOS tape. On YouTube I mean, some of them are pretty obvious which ones are better even on a smart phone.
