Who knew that magnetic tape is not just magnetic tape? That's as complicated as first, second, remastered pressings of records. ​

 

I get much more satisfaction from extracting the best recording possible out of garden-variety (entry-level) cassettes. With a good recording deck that's achievable.

I get that, and mainly I just use the Maxwell XLII tapes. But I have others, and today I am having a hard time getting a Maxell metal tape to buy us on the Teac deck. Going to try a Sony metal

 

The best value-to-performance Sony Type IV would be the XR.
