Hi everyone, I recently replaced the center gear on my Sony WM-DD33. Since the repair, the unit is working, but it’s noticeably louder than before. I can faintly hear the mechanism running from about a meter away. I’ve also run into some problems with the rewind function. On some of my older tapes, rewind makes a rattling or grinding sound, and it seems to depend on the orientation of the player. My newer tapes don’t seem to be affected as much. In addition, the REW button no longer consistently latches into place and often behaves like a push button instead of staying engaged. I was briefly able to improve this by cleaning the mechanism and removing and cleaning the stop button before reinstalling it. After doing that, REW latched properly again, but only for a few minutes of use before the problem returned. Fast forward also occasionally produces a whining noise. Has anyone experienced similar issues after a center gear replacement? Any guidance on what to check next would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Please check these threads: https://stereo2go.com/forums/thread...-wobble-problem-and-solution.7387/#post-53936 - gear noise https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/sony-dd-series-play-ff-rew-buttons-not-latching.7524/ - buttons not latching https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/pinch-roller-replacement-tutorial-for-dd-series-walkman.7080/ - noise in FF/REW The noise in FF/REW you mention, assuming I understood right, is caused by the pinch roller pin not being lubricated. Tape is spinning the roller at high speed, creating a whirring sound. Unfortunately that pin needs to be lubricated whether you replace the pinch roller or not. If however the problem is center gear skipping, see this: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/new-way-to-adjust-wm-dd-ff-rew-gear-skip.8966/ Also, it's recommended to check all the common problems (see link in my signature) as fully restoring a DD is more than just swapping the center gear. There are a lot of common problems that need to be adressed in the process.
