Is this part of the forum in decline?

plop - 2011-11-18 10:50

I've noticed a lot of people joining ever since S2G went over to being based upon hoop.la, but there does not appear to be a great deal of activity overall from noobies. If anything there have been a greater number of noobs displaying their wares for sale or seeking valuations and simplying disappearing into the night shortly afterwards.

There is some activity on the boombox sections, but otherwise given the sheer number of members recently subscribed there is a seriously disproportion lack of activity overall.

Indeed.

Recently in the walkman section it seems like I am playing the part of Will Smith in the film "I am Legend" walking the empty streets of NYC, never sure if there are on-lookers at all nearby.

You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink it!

deliverance - 2011-11-18 13:39

it might have something to do with this gent recently joining

minty - 2011-11-18 13:59

And who would you be talking about my friend?

minty - 2011-11-18 14:01

deliverance - 2011-11-18 14:05

True.

But if horse doesn't drink at all, doesn't drink again and again,

with time it makes you cold and not wanting to bring it to water anymore.

Yes, I noticed that. I'm not sure if that started to happen when the forum changed to hoopla, but indeed there's much less activity.

I miss extended posts from John Edward and all those discussions about the smaller walkman, the Dolby C list, etc...

Can it be a simple problem about usability and accesibility from old member using old version of browser or anything? It might sound simpler, but too many people is still using IE6 or IE7...

IE 9 here - p.s. I can access this website on the old computer running win98se + IE 6 just some of the graphic's take too much ram an cpu to properly display... also since this only has the older browser and a much older version of flash - while it will still play youtube stuff - it doesnt like doing too many things at once.

yeah, the new members are using newest versions of the browsers,

and stupid members are using stupidest browsers.

Well, I don't think so. No need to take it radical.

I'm just suggesting -I believe so- that in this comunity there are many members that don't know and use new technologies daily, so maybe there is a problem related to this.

Or maybe, people still use an old browser because they're using an employer's machine, and are not allowed to install a different browser.

It's not like only smart people are capable of discovering that a new version of IE is available. EVERYONE sees the announcements --- smart people AND stupid people.  Unless they're blind or something.

It's hard to imagine that majority of the active members stopped to post on here because of the ... slow browser, and that was the reason of the decline.

Would you stop to post because of that?

The problem lies in the psychology, not the technology.

IE6 has nothing to do with that.

For those who might be interested, what the problem is :
check this thread

index.php?board_oid=193392314111653483&content_oid=252505238340926605

as you may see new member is seeking for a tech help, but got no answers at all.
If you really can't help him, it's okay, but at least you can point him in the right direction.
But seems nobody even bothers to do that.
Can you answer this question, just for yourself - why ?
That would be the answer - why the forum is down.

I tried allready and just now seen this blurb?

Possible that there is simply a downturn in people needing information about cassette portable's in general?

Your turn

outland - 2011-11-22 04:48

Hey now, come on. I may be a newbie, but there's no need to single me out as the reason for the downturn of the site. I've been lurking these boards for quite a while.

The walkman section (donw here) was, for whatever reason, often quieter than the boomer section (up there).

Both sections have got less busy than they used to be, so the walkman section ends up rather low on posts.

Nicolle hasn't been around for a while either...

plop - 2011-11-22 05:16

I did see that thread, but to be honest I don't own many Sony walkmans and therefore would only be able to offer suggestive maybes to the problem at hand. To that end James has pretty much covered what I would have suggested. AIWA walkmans of a certain era are where my interests and servicing experience really lie.

I do know there are a few members on this forum who are better acquainted with this model, so maybe whenever they chose to log in, then it is better for them to offer assistance. Be that as it may, the plea for help was only up briefly before comment to the lack of response were made. Turnaround time for responses cannot be expected to be instantaneous. People frequenting this forum generally are here voluntarily and not as a means to earn a living where they are paid for replying to every single thread in record quick time however banal the response.

IMHO The general decline in numbers of people contributing to this part of the forum, has been a gradual one. More noticeable since we came over to hoopla. Given the high numbers of people joining this forum there is a disproportionate lack of overall activity throughout S2G and not just here in the walkman sections.

Public acts of bickering amongst certain members on the forum have probably also put off some noobs from contributing to this forum any further.

Sorry Plop, I didn't mean to blame you with that post, at all.
all I wanted to say, the major problem is: there is no community anymore, as it was before.
There are some reasons why it has happened.
But most important is 'great war' of 2008 on here, and some hypocrites, who couldn't call things their real names.

The root of the present problems lies in their past, as you may know.

"as you sow you shall mow",
so this is the case.

ao - 2011-11-22 08:31

I'm going to close this one.  OK, we now know how you all feel.  It is what it is & sadly we are a dwindling community but the only people who are in a position to turn things around is us.
